India's Political Powerhouse

Bharatiya Janata Party is founded on April 6, 1980 by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani after the dissolution of the Janata Party coalition. The party adopts Hindu nationalism, Gandhian socialism, and integral humanism as its core ideology.

In the 1984 general elections held in the shadow of Indira Gandhi's assassination, BJP wins only 2 seats in Lok Sabha. The party remains undeterred, building grassroots ideology. Atal Bihari Vajpayee called it "the beginning of a long journey."

BJP surges to 120 Lok Sabha seats in 1991, emerging as the principal opposition. L.K. Advani's Ram Rath Yatra (1990) significantly bolstered the party's national visibility and support base, mobilizing millions across India.

BJP becomes the single largest party with 161 seats. Atal Bihari Vajpayee is sworn in as Prime Minister but resigns after 13 days without majority support. A milestone nonetheless — the first BJP-led government of India.

BJP leads the National Democratic Alliance to victory with 182 seats. Vajpayee serves a full 5-year term as PM, overseeing the Kargil War victory, Pokhran nuclear tests, the Golden Quadrilateral highway project, and significant economic liberalization.

Under Narendra Modi's leadership, BJP wins a historic 282 seats — the first single-party majority in 30 years. The "Modi Wave" transforms Indian politics. A massive mandate for development, governance reform, and "Acche Din."

BJP wins 303 seats in Lok Sabha, further cementing Modi's dominance. The NDA alliance crosses 350 seats, making it one of India's most decisive electoral mandates. BJP now governs states covering over 65% of India's population.

BJP achieves a historic victory in West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, ending decades of left and TMC dominance. Suvendu Adhikari is sworn in as Chief Minister — a watershed moment for BJP's expansion in Eastern India and a triumph of grassroots politics.
